Tutoring

At Latchmere we feel that children are sufficiently stretched educationally and should continue to consolidate their learning at home with their families. If you need guidance on the teaching and learning strategies we use please watch the videos available on LOD or make an appointment to see your class teacher who will happily talk you through techniques.

If you choose to go ahead and hire a tutor, please use the tips below to help you pick the right person.

  • You should look for a qualified teacher who has plenty of recent experience teaching children the same age as your child.
  • Ensure they have DBS clearance and ask to see proof of this. The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children. It replaces the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).
  • We strongly recommend that you stay in the room with your child so that you are aware of what they are being taught and the strategies the tutor is using. This way you can ensure the tutor is using the same techniques your child is using at school and you can continue to support your child’s learning when the tutor is not there.
  • References should be gathered from professional establishments as well as other parents.
